Thinking of Marketing a Product related to soccer during 2010?

Thinking of Marketing a Product related to soccer during 2010?

Many of us have given this some thought, but do we know of all the rules and regulations which will apply to this very simple concept? I have done some research and hours of reading on the subject.

You need to be very careful if you are planning to do this. A Pub is Johannesburg was taken to court due to a campaign he launched which included some posters and signage on his roof. Be very weary not to use any of the official terms and logos in any marketing campaign or product branding.

Some of the basic guidelines are as follows:

Don’t use these words or combination and derivation of these words.

  • • 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa
  • • 2010 FIFA World Cup • FIFA World Cup
  • • World Cup
  • • 2010 World Cup
  • • World Cup 2010
  • • South Africa 2010 / SA 2010 / ZA 2010
  • • 2010 South Africa • Football World Cup
  • • Soccer World Cup, or any similar derivations or combinations.

Basic rules:

  • • Do not market within 10Km of the designated venue, unless you are authorised to do this.
  • • Advertise using FIFA’s official mark – emblem, mascot, logo and poster.
  • • Run promotional competitions or auction tickets on-line.
  • • Use the official FIFA mark in infomercials and advertorials.
  • • Use match schedules for commercial purposes.
  • • Use merchandise with the official FIFA mark for commercial purposes.

But not all is lost, if you would like to become an official service provider or supplier you can contact your LOC on 011 567 2010, or the Global Brands Group on 011 537 4641.

Please tread carefully, FIFA and their lawyers is constantly monitoring the situation, you will most probably 1st receive a warning letter, but you can also end up in court and most probably will be fined and or imprisoned, if found to be in contradiction to any of the guidelines and laws governing the events, markings etc.
